Experiments with Fog Feedback, 2024-2026
Single, two-channel, and three-channel video with sound
Dimensions variable
Experiments with Fog Feedback consists of a body of work and series of seasonal video and sound performances that are site-specific and weather-dependent. It is part of an artistic research project that explores an aesthetic engagement with seasonal fog, an atmospheric condition that shapes coastal life in California that is decreasing in frequency as a result of climate change. Through experiments with video and sound feedback, the project treats fog as an artistic material to collaborate with.
The project takes place at natural reserves along the central coast of California during spring and summer months. Fieldwork conducted at these sites focused on the observation of fog formation, presence, and duration, and developing a site-specific understanding of the ecology and topography of each place. Observations resulting from fieldwork informed the design of live video-projection experiments and performances. The performances explore fog as an artistic material as well as a medium for sensing anthropogenic climate change through direct interaction. The specific time of day and seasonal weather conditions necessary for the production of each performance requires a perceptual recalibration contributing to an intensified experience of deeper sensory encounter. The individual works can be exhibited as a research-based project that includes a series of single-channel, two-channel, and three-channel videos with stereo and four-channel audio, as well as photographs and text.
